Understanding Batch Variance Across Stone Types
Whether you are purchasing porcelain, sandstone, limestone or granite products for internal or external installation, it is important to understand that batch variance is a natural occurrence across all stone types, though the degree of variation differs depending on the material.
Porcelain: Variance is usually caused by differences in firing temperature, glaze application and pigment blending. This can affect colour, shade, and pattern from one batch to another.
Sandstone: As a natural stone, sandstone often shows noticeable variation in colour, grain, and texture due to differences in mineral composition and quarry location.
Limestone: Limestone commonly varies in tone, veining, fossils, and surface movement because it is formed naturally and each block can be unique.
Granite: Granite batch variance can include changes in colour, crystal size, veining, and pattern, depending on the quarry section and extraction period.
Important Information About Colour Variance
This potential variance means the stone you receive upon ordering may differ slightly from the samples received from us, or if you have previously purchased the same stone colour from us before or another supplier. This applies equally to porcelain, sandstone, limestone and granite, as no two batches, whether manufactured or naturally quarried are ever guaranteed to be identical.
How to Minimise Batch Variance
In order to preserve the uniformity of your chosen product, we recommend the following:
- Order enough to complete your project from the same batch number. It is not recommended to combine different sizes since these may be from different batch numbers.
- Allow an extra 10–15% on all orders on top of your area coverage, which is common practice in the industry. This additional allowance accounts for tiles you may want to select out, use as spares further down the line, or for breakages that may sometimes occur during transportation, which in most cases can be used as off-cuts.
- If installing from different batches, it is recommended to mix the tiles or slabs from each batch evenly across your project area to achieve a more consistent overall colour tone. This will minimise visible colour variations in the finished result.
- Avoid laying one pack at a time from a single batch and then switching to another, as you may notice slight colour variances where the two batches meet. Sometimes the difference in colour is very subtle and you may get away with completing your project with two different batches used side by side, however, this cannot be guaranteed.
- Order sufficient tiles at the start of your project. Batches will most likely change if ordered at a later date, which is why early planning and accurate measurement are essential.
